Join the gardening revolution this winter in Sandpoint, Idaho! Winter Sowing is your golden ticket if you’ve ever felt the itch to dig in the dirt while the snowflakes dance outside. Mark your calendars for Saturday, 18 January 2025, at 01:00 pm (PST), and head to 180 Osprey Ln, Priest River, ID. This event, hosted by the NLHG of Bonner County, is not just a gathering; it’s a celebration of all things green amid winter.
What is Winter Sowing?
Winter sowing is a delightful technique that allows you to start your seeds outdoors during the chilly months. Imagine using everyday items like milk jugs or plastic containers as mini-greenhouses. This method saves you money and gives your seeds a natural stratification process, which means they get to experience the winter chill that many plants need to germinate properly. Plus, it’s a great way to get your gardening fix before spring arrives!
The Event Details
At this engaging gathering, you’ll be guided by Lindsay, the Education Coordinator, who will share her expertise on the science and timing of winter sowing. She’ll cover both container methods and direct in-ground planting techniques. And if you’re feeling crafty, stick around for the make-and-take session starting at 3:00 pm. Bring a cleaned-out milk jug or an empty gallon of water, and you’ll get hands-on experience creating your winter sowing container. Don’t worry about supplies; soil and seeds are provided!
But that’s not all! Miranda will kick off the event with her first Tip Talk of the year, sharing savvy tips on saving money on groceries—perfect for those looking to stretch their budgets while cultivating their homesteading skills.
A Community Gathering
This event is all about inclusivity and support. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out. You don’t need acres of land or livestock to join in; each participant’s journey is personal and unique. The NLHG emphasizes homesteading is about doing things at home instead of running to the store.
So, come ready to build connections and share experiences. Ladies aged 16 and older and nursing babies under one-year-old are invited to attend. However, please arrange alternate care for older children so you can fully immerse yourself in this gardening adventure.
Meet Local Business Leaders
As part of this gathering, you’ll also get to meet Stephanie Offermann, our VIP Featured Businesswoman for January. She represents North Idaho Undercoating and will likely share insights into local business initiatives that support our community’s growth.
